IOWA CITY - Iowa City Regina dropped 50 points on Friday.
Yet, it was the Regals’ defense that was the focal point of postgame praise.
Class 1A No. 3 Iowa City Regina moved to 5-0 (2-0) with a dominant, 50-6, win over District 6 foe Durant (3-2, 1-1) on homecoming night at Regina.
The Regals held Durant to 15 yards of total offense in the first half — 31 total for the game.
“I would say it was domination with our defense,” Regina Coach Dustin Elsbury said. “I don't think they had any long breakaway runs or really big plays. We followed it up on the back end and we were playing physical football up front.
“Obviously our offense is scoring points, but our defense really impressed me tonight.”
It was a one-sided affair from the opening series.
On the Wildcats’ first drive, Regina forced a fumble and Aaron Honore recovered it at Durant’s 17.
Three plays later, Savion Miller punched in a 1-yard touchdown.
“Our defense played fantastic,” quarterback Kyle Tracy said. “It's really easy to play offense when we're starting on the opponent's 40 every time.”
Late in the first, Drew Greve blocked a 35-yard Durant field goal attempt and returned it for six.
“We were able to really dominate when we were running, passing and when we were returning on special teams,” Tracy said. “I thought it was a very clean game. We just played like ourselves and trusted our system.”
Tracy then connected with Miller on a screen — Miller did the rest, exploding for a 31-yard score as the Regals led 21-0 after one.
“The guy's (Miller) got a relentless motor — he's a workhorse,” Tracy said. “He can score at will. He’s a humble guy, but if you let him loose, he’s going to break one for 80 yards.”
Regina began the second quarter with a little trickery. Tracy tossed to Honore, who launched it to Greve for a 35-yard TD.
“It makes my life really easy when our running backs (Honore) are throwing 40-yard touchdowns,” Tracy said. “And Drew, you can always trust him to go out there and be in the right spot.”
Not much went Durant’s way Friday, particularly in the first half, as a high snap went over the punter’s head for a safety.
Edwin Gangba took the ensuing punt 65 yards to the house giving Regina a 36-0 lead and putting the continuous clock rule into effect midway through the second quarter.
Late in the second, Tracy threw a strike to Tate Wallace for a 15-yard touchdown as Regina took a 43-0 lead into intermission.
Early in the third, Tracy connected with Wallace again, this time for a 63-yard score.
“Everybody can look at the stats and see that he's (Wallace) a great receiver,” Tracy said. “What you don't see is we got called for a penalty two weeks ago because he was blocking too hard. He's pancaking guys all over the place. When he's not getting the ball, he's still giving 100 percent effort.”
Regina will travel to play Sigourney-Keota next Friday.
“We didn't shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties and we were able to run our base stuff and really shut the door right away,” Elsbury. “It's fun when you do that and you can get everybody in the game plenty of playing time.”
