CEDAR RAPIDS — Once again, Iowa City Regina didn’t have to look far for its new varsity head football coach. He was right there in the school building.
The school announced Wednesday that Dustin Elsbury has been tabbed to lead the program. Elsbury is a teacher at the school.
A Coe College graduate, he began his coaching career at the school. Elsbury was an assistant coach for the Regals under Jason Dumont, who announced last month he was stepping down as head coach after three seasons and retiring from the sport.
Dumont had been an assistant at Regina under Marv Cook.
“I am honored and excited to lead the Regina football program,” Elsbury said in a news release by the school. “Regina has a rich history of success, and I am committed to building on that legacy. I look forward to working with our student-athletes to develop their skills, instill a strong work ethic and foster a sense of community both on and off the field.
“Football is the ultimate team sport. In my life, I have been blessed with an elite team of mentors to show me what it takes to be a successful leader. I cannot thank them enough.”
One of the best smaller-school programs in the state, Regina went 9-2 this past season, losing to MFL MarMac in the Class 1A playoff quarterfinals.
“We are ecstatic to have Coach Elsbury step into his new role of head varsity football coach,” Regina Activities Director Taylor Hotek said. ”His passion for Regina and dedication to our student-athletes, both on and off the field, aligns perfectly with our school's values. We believe that under Dustin's leadership, Regina football will continue its tradition of excellence.“
