Bundrage, Lalk turn a few heads at Iowa State Pro Day
Mar. 22, 2016 7:16 pm
AMES — Any thoughts of what might have been were thoughts former Iowa State wide receiver Quenton Bundrage tried to keep out of his mind.
When he stepped onto the turf inside the Bergstrom Football Complex on Tuesday afternoon, he put his injury from two seasons ago out of his mind and was zeroed in on giving the scouts in attendance for the Cyclones Pro Day something good.
'It's a different chapter in my life,' Bundrage said. 'I'm not going out there trying to put on a show for the college fans. I'm trying to make a career now. There's more to it, but like I said this is about a career now and taking that next step.'
Bundrage was one of nine ISU players from last year's team that worked out for NFL scouts representing 25 teams, and the 6-foot-2, 198-pound receiver felt good about what he showed those in attendance. He ran a 4.52 40-yard dash, 17 on bench and a 7.07 on the 3-Cone.
The training since the end of the season has been a little more intensified on performing in workouts as opposed to getting in game-shape, but Bundrage said his work in the weight room — as well as some prep off the field — has been invaluable in getting him ready for his shot at performing in front of scouts.
'Just preparing mentally and physically,' Bundrage said. 'I've gained a couple pounds and knew I had to come out here and catch the ball. That was probably the biggest thing other than running the fast times.'
Bundrage was Iowa State's big play receiver in 2013 as a sophomore when he led the team in catches (48), receiving yards (676) and touchdown catches (9). Then on the fourth play of his junior year, he went down with an ACL tear that sidelined him until the following spring.
In his final season in Ames, Bundrage had 41 catches, 548 yards and four touchdowns — all second on the team to Allen Lazard. In the 12 months since he started going through workouts, Bundrage doesn't worry about his knee and is telling NFL scouts — several of which, he said, were eager to meet up with him again — there is no reason they should be either.
'I've worked five years for it and coming off an injury and still seeing I can turn heads and open up eyes is a blessing,' Bundrage said.
Dale Pierson, Qujuan Floyd, Kenneth Lynn, Oni Omoile, Sam B. Richardson, Sam E. Richardson and Wendell Taiese all joined Bundrage in workouts, but offensive lineman Jamison Lalk was another who heard good things from the scouts.
Lalk recorded 22 on bench press, a 30-inch vertical jump, a 5.26 40-yard dash and a 7.79 on 3-Cone.
'I had a good day and had good numbers during the drills,' Lalk said. '(The scouts) said I looked good and had a couple guys interested in keeping in touch and maybe going on some visits and stuff like that.'
