MARION — The Marion Fire Department on Wednesday announced it had concluded its investigation into a July fire that killed 33-year-old Marquel Jenkins.
Jenkins’ death, after an autopsy, was ruled accidental because of inhalation of combustible materials and carbon, according to a press release from the fire department.
Marion firefighters were called to the fire at 7:43 a.m. July 11 in a residence in the 3400 block of Quail Trail Court. They removed Jenkins from the building, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation found that the fire started near the stove in the kitchen, but the exact cause was undetermined. Investigators also learned that not all the smoke detectors in the residence were working when the fire started, the release states.
The Marion Fire Department investigated the fire with the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Marion Police Department.
