Lightning strike causes fire at Cedar Rapids home

CEDAR RAPIDS — A lightning strike started a fire Tuesday morning in a Cedar Rapids home and displaced a family, according to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.
Fire crews were called at 4:26 a.m. Tuesday to the home in the 400 block of Limerick Drive NW. A hole in the roof of the garage attached to the house marked where the lightning struck, and fire was visible in the top of the house.
Two adults and two minors were home at the time, but escaped safely. They have been displaced and were being assisted by the Red Cross, according to the department.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but the house sustained water and smoke damage.
