Firefighters stood on a sandbar in the Cedar River and used 400 feet of hose, strung off a highway bridge, Saturday afternoon to fight a fire in a log jam.
The fire was reported at 3:50 p.m. Saturday in a pile of dead trees and branches that had accumulated against the Iowa Northern Railroad Bridge in the Cedar River, just west of Cedar Rapids, according to a news release from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
Firefighters fed about 400 feet of hose off the Highway 100 bridge to firefighters on a sandbar in the river. Water was fed into the Palo Fire Department pump truck by the Atkins and Shellsburg fire departments’ tankers, and then pumped down below.
The effort required the closure of one eastbound lane of traffic on Highway 100.
No traffic incidents or injuries were reported.
The fire was responded to by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and Rescue, Iowa State Patrol, and Palo, Atkins and Shellsburg fire departments.
