According to a news release, the Cedar Rapids Fire Department was dispatched at 1:55 a.m. to a fire at 5701 Briarwood St. SW, which is a few blocks west of Kirkwood Community College.
The passerby called in the emergency. When firefighters arrived, a 71-year-old male occupant was out of the house. Fire crews could see smoke coming from the home.
The man was taken by Area Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center.
Fire crews extinguished the fire in the kitchen area within a few minutes and ventilated the house, which had smoke damage throughout the structure.
The news release noted that smoke alarms were not working when they arrived and reminded residents to have working smoke alarms in every bedroom and hallways.
