Cedar Rapids fire that killed man was accidental
Second man pulled from house suffered non-life-threatening injuries

CEDAR RAPIDS — A fire that killed a 78-year-old man Tuesday in Cedar Rapids was started by accident, according to a news release from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.
The fire started on the first floor of a home in the 1200 block of N Street SW. Firefighters were called to the scene at 10:07 a.m. Tuesday.
One man had been removed from the home by Cedar Rapids police officers before firefighters arrived and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters also removed Frederick Slagenweit, 78, from the home and took him to a hospital where he later died.
