CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded Friday morning to a report of a fire at the Cherry Building, 329 10th Ave. SE, a 105-year-old loft-style building that houses multiple businesses near the NewBo City Market.
Fire crews were called to the scene at 8:44 a.m., and arrived to find that a sprinkler next to a pottery kiln had activated, according to a news release from the department.
“It is presumed that the chimney of the kiln released enough heat to activate the sprinkler system,” the release states.
Firefighters deployed hose lines to cool the kiln while the sprinkler system was shut down. The overheating was under control by 9:28 a.m., according to the fire department.
