Cedar Rapids Downtown Library closing to finish cleanup after fire

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Downtown Library will close Wednesday through Friday to allow for a final cleanup from a fire at the library in July.

The fire broke out in a light fixture above the commons area on July 27. There was little damage to library materials, but there was smoke residue and water residue from sprinklers going off.

The library closed for the month of August to perform cleaning and maintenance.

When the library opened again in September, there was still a bit of damage still present, which should be taken care of during this week’s closing, officials said.

Meetings for Baby & Toddler Story Time and Chess Club, which were both scheduled for Wednesday, have been canceled. The Ladd Library will remain open.

The library was previously scheduled to close for a staff training day on Nov. 11, but will now be open on that day.
