Bystanders rescue Palo man from house fire Wednesday morning
A firefighter was injured, one dog died and another dog was rescued during the fire

PALO — Bystanders rescued a man from a house fire in Palo early Wednesday morning, according to a news release from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
Scott Lane, 43, was rescued from his home at 700 Second St., Palo at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. He received non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital by Hiawatha Ambulance.
Firefighters from the Palo, Atkins, Center Point, Shellsburg and Hiawatha fire departments arrived and rescued — and revived — a dog that was in the house. A second dog died in the blaze. Firefighters then extinguished the fire, the release states.
One firefighter received non-life-threatening injuries while battling the fire and was taken to a hospital by Hiawatha Ambulance.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire departments and ambulance were assisted by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and the Hiawatha Police Department, who also responded to the fire, according to the release.
