Kirkwood softball has persevered injury and staved off elimination to return to NJCAA Softball World Series, beginning on Monday in Oxford, Ala.

The Eagles won three elimination games, including back-to-back 11-9 and 15-9 victories over Iowa Central on Sunday to win the Region 11-B softball tournament title.

Kirkwood Coach Eric Frese has seen the progress made by freshman Jessa DeMoss. He had confidence in her to open the postseason and she responded with a complete game two-hitter in a 5-1 win over Northeast.

Sophomore Kiya has swung a hot bat this spring for the Eagles. She was named NJCAA DIvision II Player of the Week and followed it up with four hits and nine RBIs in a double sweep of Ellsworth Wednesday at home.

Peyton Johnson was a first-team All-American in her first season at Kirkwood. In her second season, Johnson has continue to produce and impress for the Eagles softball team.

Kirkwood’s softball team left no doubt in its quest to return to the NJCAA Division II World Series. The Eagles hammered Southeast (Neb.) Community College, 15-1 and 8-0, to win the best-of-3 series and advance to the national championships.

Top-seeded Kirkwood won three straight elimination games, including back-to-back victories over Iowa Central to win the NJCAA Region 11-A championship. The Eagles advance to a district tournament series May 10-11 at home.

Kirkwood’s Sailor Hall leads the team in starts, innings pitched and wins. She closed the Eagles’ softball doubleheader sweep against Southeastern Thursday at home, throwing a shutout for her ninth win of the season.

Kirkwood’s Alexea Mendoza admits to an aggressive approach at the plate. She went 5-for-7 with two home runs, two doubles and six RBIs in the Eagles’ doubleheader sweep over Southeastern.

Emilee Linder expected a big jump from her small high school at Pekin to college softball at Kirkwood. In her second season, she ranks among the Eagles’ offensive leaders.
