The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported 24 swim advisories at state park beaches this summer because of microcystins, toxins generated by harmful algae. These toxins, if ingested, can cause gastroenteritis, allergic responses and potentially-fatal liver damage. This is double the number of microcystin warnings in 2020.
“At some point, you have to take action,” said Tamara Marcus, county sustainability program manager and co-author of the county’s first greenhouse gas emissions report. “We have to act now.”

EDDYVILLE, Iowa (AP) — An industrial acid leak at an animal feed supplement plant outside the southeastern Iowa town of Eddyville led to a shelter-in-place order and delayed local school openings, officials said.
