Worker justice group to file wage theft complaint against Iowa City factory
Nov. 19, 2014 2:57 pm
IOWA CITY - An Eastern Iowa organization plans to file a complaint against a large packaging supply company with a factory in Iowa City. Activists say they are taking action against RockTenn after hearing numerous stories of alleged wage theft and other issues from current and former employees.
Members of the Center for Worker Justice announced the move at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
The organization says RockTenn employees don't have set work schedules and have 'constant uncertainty about whether wages will be paid for all hours worked.”
The complaint will be filed with the U.S. Department of Labor, according to a news release from the organization. The complaint also will include the names of Sedona Staffing and CFA Staffing, two temporary agencies that have contracts with the Georgia-based company, according to Misty Rebik of the Center for Worker Justice.
Rebik said workers are frequently instructed to show up early for work, but they don't receive compensation for the 30 to 45 minute wait times before their shifts begin.
Representatives with RockTenn were not immediately available for comment Tuesday.
