Who's running for school board? (And who's not?)

In the school board election set for Sept. 8, all candidates were required to file by 5 p.m. on July 30. Candidates have until 5 p.m. on Aug. 4 to withdraw, and community members have until then to object to candidates' filings on eligibility grounds.
Below is a list of the candidates who have filed to run for school board in several Corridor school districts. Click on a district name to view more on that race. Click on a candidate's name to read more about her or him.

Four seats are up for election.
District 1
Mary Meisterling (incumbent) — First elected in 2002
'I'm interested in continuing my service on the board to advance the initiatives we've put forth over the last several years.'
District 4
Rafael Jacobo — Parent, president of Franklin Middle School parent-teacher association
'It's great to have vision, but you need to have perspective from the day-to-day, what actually happens in a building.'
Allen Witt (incumbent) — First elected in 2011
"We have an opportunity to do a lot of the things that I hear in the community. One of the biggest ones is project-based learning."
At-large
Todd Cohenour — Customer service associate
'I'm not going to be a rubber stamp for the superintendent. I'm going to question things.'
Kristin Janssen — Parent; program manager and project specialist, Veterans Health Administration
'I would like to see some equity — while not diminishing the focus on (Advanced Placement classes), having some additional focus placed on non-AP classes.'
John Laverty (incumbent) — First elected in 2007
"We've made it through a phase of our community's history and the district's history that was no fun for everybody. The light at the end of the tunnel is very much here."
Ann Rosenthal (incumbent) — First elected in 1999
'My goals would be to continue to work on student achievement.'
Iowa City Community School District
Five seats — four four-year terms and one two-year term — are up for election.
LaTasha DeLoach - Parent, community projects specialist for Johnson County social services
'I didn't see myself, I didn't see my friends, and I didn't see my children represented.'
Shawn Eyestone - Parent, former district parents organization president
'As an officer on the (district parent organization), I got to hear from all the representatives from all of the different schools and kind of got a nice broad-based opinion from the whole community.'
Todd Fanning - Chief financial officer, University of Iowa Community Credit Union
'I actually have almost 30 years of financial institution experience. I think this will help me a lot in the finance area.'
Phil Hemingway - Auto repair business owner
Said he would bring a 'blue-collar background' to the board and would focus on fiscal responsibility.
Jason T. Lewis - Parent, former PTO president
'We've really struggled over the past couple of decades to achieve socioeconomic balance.'
Brian Richman - Parent, University of Iowa finance professor
'I think there have been a lot of decisions made in the last couple years where there just hasn't been adequate community involvement or an adequate amount of discussion.'
Lori Roetlin - Parent, social worker at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
'I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all approach to success for all our children.'
Lucas S. Van Orden - Parent, veterinary business owner
'To know where you are, you've got to know where you've been.'
Brianna Wills - Parent, former district parents organization co-president
Said she would have a 'more collaborative, less adversarial' relationship with district administrators.
Tom Yates - Retired teacher, former teachers union president
'I feel that the public has been shut out to some extent.'
Two-year term
Christopher Liebig - Hoover Elementary School parent, University of Iowa professor
'I've been writing online for almost six years (long before the Hoover closure) about the increasingly top-down nature of public education and
how the school system seems increasingly removed from meaningful democratic control.'
Paul Roesler - Parent, former district committee member
'The Facilities Master Plan I think is a great plan. It covers the entire district and it brings all the schools up to a similar level.'
Megan Schwalm - Parent, diversity consultant
Said board members should gather more input from the people affected by their decisions before voting.
Not running
Patti Fields (incumbent) - First elected in 2005
Jeff McGinness (incumbent) - First elected in 2011.
'It is (a) tough and immensely time consuming position if one is to effectively perform the required duties.'
Marla Swesey (incumbent) - First elected in 2011
Orville Townsend (incumbent) - Appointed in 2014 (previously served from 1986 to 1989).
Said at the time that he would not run in the 2015 election. "When I give my word, I stand by (it)."
Tuyet Baruah (incumbent) - First elected in 2009. Resigned effective this September.
'I've provided alternative perspectives. I hope that the new board welcomes alternative perspectives.'
Clear Creek Amana Community School District
Five seats — four four-year terms and one two-year term — are up for election.
District 1: Jennifer Mooney
District 2 (two-year term): Bob Broghammer (incumbent, currently an at-large board member)
District 3: Steve Swenka (incumbent)
At-large: Terry Davis (incumbent), Matt McAreavy (incumbent, previously appointed to district 2)
College Community School District
Four seats are up for election.
District 1: Greg Kelsey (incumbent)
District 3: Randy Bauer (incumbent)
District 4: Angela Ehle (incumbent)
At-large: Dot Pospischil (incumbent)
Linn-Mar Community School District
Four seats are up for election.
Candidates: George Abouassaly, Craig Adamson, Melissa Glasser, Tim Isenberg (incumbent), Sondra Nelson, Clark Weaver, Elizabeth Wilson (incumbent)
Incumbents Barry Buchholz and Bob Crawford are not running.
Marion Independent School District
Four seats are up for election

Incumbent Dan Barkley is not running.
Mount Vernon Community School District
Five seats — four four-year terms and one two-year term — are up for election.

Solon Community School District
Two seats are up for election.
Candidates: Dan Coons (incumbent), Jim Hauer, Adam Haluska, Amber Marty
Incumbent Dean A. Martin is not running.
