CEDAR RAPIDS — The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success, which has empowered Black and biracial students in Cedar Rapids for more than 35 years, is preparing to transition to a new chapter with the retirement of its founder and executive director, Ruth White.
White founded the academy in 1989 when she was working as a teacher and academic adviser to minority students at Washington High School. Since then, the institution has provided “transformative education, leadership development and cultural affirmation,” according to a news release announcing White’s retirement.
The academy has offered students summer experiences, academic year initiatives, and college readiness support while nurturing pride in their identities and communities.
“This transition is not about stepping away — it’s about stepping forward,” White said in a news release. “We are preparing to pass the torch in a way that honors the legacy we’ve built while welcoming new energy and leadership that will carry us into the future. The needs of our students and community have not diminished — they’ve deepened. We need leadership that understands that and is ready to meet the moment.”
The news release calls the transition “an opportunity to reaffirm and expand the impact of a beloved community institution.”
“At a time when countless young people face uncertainty and systemic barriers, The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success stands as a pillar of stability, purpose, and direction,” Wes Butterfield, board treasurer, said in the news release. “With a proven legacy of academic excellence, cultural empowerment, and leadership development, it doesn’t just add value — it is essential. By expanding access, creating opportunities, and fostering achievement, the academy is shaping future generations and transforming the community.”
The academy will host two open house events next week to bring together alumni, families, partners and supporters to share their insights and hopes for the organization’s future.
- Monday, April 7, 8-10 a.m.
- Thursday, April 10, 3:30-6 p.m.
The events will be held at the academy’s recently purchased and renovated building, 119 14th St. SE, in Cedar Rapids.
Empowered Solutions Collective, a Cedar Rapids-based consulting firm has been hired to lead the transition process. The firm specializes in equity-driven strategic planning and organizational development.
