Degner recommended for Iowa City director of schools
Jan. 26, 2015 3:21 pm
IOWA CITY - Matt Degner, the principal of Iowa City's South East Junior High School, has accepted the Iowa City Community School District's director of schools position, he said in an email to parents over the weekend.
Superintendent Stephen Murley has recommended that the Iowa City schoool board approve Degner's hire at its Tuesday meeting, according to board documents. Degner would resign from his current position on Friday and take over Monday as director of schools, according to the board documents.
'The plan for the spring will be to have me serve in both roles as we transition through the end of the school year,” Degner wrote to South East Junior High parents in an email sent Saturday morning.
Ann Feldmann, one of two assistant superintendents in the district, logged her last day on the job last month and will officially retire in April. She said last month that the director of schools position would help account for her duties.
As part of a restructuring of the district's administration, Feldmann said, assistant superintendent Becky Furlong would take on most academic responsibilities and hire a director of schools to assist her.
Degner did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
