Ode to Patti

You have guided young minds for twice score and two

As legions of students swear they once knew

A teacher so bold as to expect nothing less

Than hard work and joy at doing their best.

For the decades have passed as swift as a day

And nothing's worth more, Goethe would say,

Than this one today, to live … and then,

Wait a minute, I'm sixty … and ten.
