Iowa continues to become a state of urban dwellers separated by an emptier countryside, according to U.S. Census statistics released July 1, 2009.
Population in Iowa's metro counties is growing, while population in rural counties is shrinking.
Use the search box below to look at population of counties, cities in Iowa or elsewhere in the United States.
That pattern is played out in such area cities as Fairfax, Shueyville, and North Liberty, all of which have more than doubled in size since 2000, while outlying communities posted more modest gains or even declined.
Iowa's population grew by .6 percent, as Iowa City and Cedar Rapids added 1.7 and 1.0 percent respectively to maintain the decade's modest growth. Davenport pushed past the 100,000 mark, making it Iowa's third city of 100,000 or more.
The population estimates for last July 1 use building permits, mobile home shipments, and estimates of housing loss to update change since the 2000 Census. The data released today was prepared before the June 2008 floods, meaning the impacts may appear in next year's projections.
