They are two Iowa natives from two Iowa universities.
Iowa State’s Audi Crooks and Drake’s Katie Dinnebier share another similarity — they are Associated Press All-American women’s basketball players.
Crooks earned third-team honors, and Dinnebier received honorable mention from the AP’s 31-voter panel, released Wednesday.
Three players were unanimous first-team selections: JuJu Watkins of USC, Paige Bueckers of Connecticut and Lauren Betts of UCLA. They are joined on the first team by Hannah Hidalgo of Notre Dame and Madison Booker of Texas.
A 6-foot-3 sophomore post, Crooks has averaged 23.2 points per game this season. The Algona native — she won a pair of Class 1A state championships at Garrigan High School — led the Big 12 Conference in shooting percentage at 60.2 percent and leads the nation in field goals made (304).
She finished with 20-plus points in 22 games this season and has gone over 30 points on seven occasions.
Crooks moves up from honorable-mention status as a freshman.
Iowa State (22-12) faces Princeton in a First Four matchup at the NCAA tournament at 6 p.m. today at South Bend, Ind. The winner plays Michigan on Friday.
A Waukee native, Dinnebier is a two-time Missouri Valley Conference player of the year.
She is sixth in the nation in scoring (23.4 points per game) and leads the country in assists (7.3 per game). She has recorded 12 30-plus point games this season, most in the NCAA, and is the first player since NCAA tracked assists as an official stat (1985) to average at least 22 points, seven assists, and 2.5 steals in a single season.
Dinnebier is the first Drake AP All-American since Lizzy Wendell earned honorable mention in 2017.
Also Wednesday, Crooks was a third-team pick by the United States Basketball Writers Association, and Dinnebier earned honorable mention.
The AP will honor the national player of the year and national coach of the year at the Final Four in Tampa, Fla.
