The demand for veterinary services in Iowa — and across the country — grew during the pandemic as adoptions and the pet population increased. This demand has outpaced the number of graduating veterinarians, causing strain on a system that was already facing challenges pre-pandemic, various professionals told The Gazette.
The shortage of veterinarians is being felt across the industry, but some clinics — such as specialty and emergency practices — “have been particularly challenged.”
Critter Crusaders helped a 9-month-old puppy with hip and head injuries and other fractures by offering the medical care he needed after being hit be a car on First Avenue in Cedar Rapids in April. Caesar, a Lab-pit bull mix, is still recovering and in foster care but soon will be ready for adoption.
