UPDATE: Man who died in Highway 30 accident in Mount Vernon identified

One person was killed in a fatal three-vehicle accident in Mount Vernon Thursday evening that closed Highway 30 for hours.

According to a media release from the Linn County Sheriff's Office, at roughly 4:41 p.m. Thursday emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of a fatal accident on Highway 30, west of 10th Avenue in Mount Vernon.

Upon arriving officers determined the circumstances behind the accident. According to the release, police say that a vehicle driven by Curtis Rawson, 49, of Mount Vernon was traveling east on Highway 30 in his Chevrolet Silverado when he crossed the centerline, striking an oncoming Pontiac Grand Prix and a Ford F-150.

The driver of the Pontiac was pronounced dead at the scene and has been identified by authorities as John Stevan Kerr, 70, of Lisbon.

Rawson was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for what police believe to be non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release. The Ford was occupied by Royce and Sandra Lehrman, of Mechanicsville, and they were not injured in the accident. Officials believe that all of the motorists were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.

Highway 30 was closed for approximately three hours between Willow Creek Rd and 10th Avenue in Mount Vernon as emergency responders worked on scene.

Linn County Sheriff's Deputies were assisted on scene by the Mount Vernon Police and Fire Departments, Mount Vernon Ambulance, Lisbon Police and Fire Departments, Air Care Air Ambulance, the Iowa Department of Transportation, Iowa State Patrol, the Marion Police Department, and Linn County Rescue.

The accident remains under investigation by the Linn County Sheriff's Office.
