CEDAR RAPIDS — Three people have been charged in relation to a shots-fired incident that happened Saturday afternoon in Cedar Rapids.
Police were called to the 300 block of 19th Street SE at 1:05 p.m. for a report that someone had shot toward an occupied residence on the block, according to criminal complaints and a press release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
Officers were told the suspects were two males running toward Johnston STEAM Academy magnet school. When police arrived in the area, they saw two people matching the description they’d been given get into a purple Ford Fusion and attempt to elude officers. A chase followed, during which the two males got out of the car near the intersection of Mount Vernon Road SE and 17th Street SE and ran toward the nearby Oak Hill Cemetery, according to a complaint.
One of the males, who then led police on a foot chase, was identified by police as Larell Marvel Rushing, 17, of Cedar Rapids. During the chase, police said he discarded a silver .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun he had in his possession, which officers later retrieved. Rushing was arrested and charged in adult court with intimidation with a dangerous weapon, trafficking stolen weapons, interference with official acts, possession of a firearm by a felon, and minor armed with a dangerous weapon.
The other suspect who ran from the vehicle was identified as Camron Rushing, 20, of Cedar Rapids. He has been charged with interference with official acts.
A man police say was the driver of the car — Kristophe F. Rushing, 18, of Cedar Rapids — also has been arrested and charged with eluding while exceeding the speed limit by 25 mph or more, accessory after the fact and interference with official acts.
Kristophe Rushing had his first appearance in court Monday and was released after posting a $5,000 bond. Camron Rushing also was released after pleading guilty to his charge and being sentenced to a $250 fine, to be paid in monthly $50 increments starting in September. Larell Rushing had not had his first appearance in court as of Monday afternoon.
