A man escaped injury early Wednesday morning when his car was struck by a train in Cedar Rapids.
Richard W. Jeray, 24, was driving a 2014 Ford Fusion on westbound Eighth Avenue SE shortly before 5 a.m. as a northbound Iowa Northern Railway train approached the crossing in the 400 block of Eighth Avenue, according to police investigators.
Though red crossing lights were flashing and the train blew its horn, Jeray attempted to cross the tracks and was struck by the train, police said.
Jeray was not injured but his car was significantly damaged and its air bags deployed.
The street was closed until about 6:15 a.m., according to Cedar Rapids police on social media.
Jeray was cited for Failure to Properly Stop at a Railroad Crossing.
