A Tiffin man and two juveniles were taken into custody at gunpoint Saturday evening after Iowa City officers saw one of the juveniles running with a pistol in the area where the three were witnessed breaking into condominiums, according to a criminal complaint.
Anthony S. Akers, 20, of Tiffin, was identified by a witness who also saw two juveniles with Akers breaking into several units in the 600 block of Westwinds Drive, Iowa City, the complaint stated. Police said the suspects gained entry into one of the homes by kicking in the front door.
The pistol seen by officers was later identified as an air gun, according to the complaint.
Akers' backpack contained two plastic bags, each with approximately 28 grams of marijuana, and a crescent wrench was found on Akers, according to the complaint.
Akers has been charged with second-degree burglary, a Class C felony, possession of burglar's tools, an aggravated misdemeanor, and possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor. If convicted, second-degree burglary is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
