Two teenagers are now charged with attempted murder in relation to a shooting that happened earlier this month in Iowa City.
On Friday, the Iowa City Police Department announced the arrest of Moayed E. Elsid, 17, of Iowa City, who is charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm as a felon in connection with the Aug. 3 shooting.
The Friday news release also stated another juvenile was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm as a felon, but did not identify the juvenile because that charge is not a forcible felony. On Monday, the department issued another release identifying the second juvenile as Nathaniel D. Washington, 17, of North Liberty and stating he has now also been charged with attempted murder.
Police say Elsid and Washington shot a woman in the stomach just before 3 a.m. on Aug. 3 in a parking lot at 618 E. Court St. in Iowa City. The shooters have an ongoing dispute with the woman’s juvenile son, who was stabbed twice last year as a result of the dispute, criminal complaints state.
Three other people sustained non-life threatening injuries in the shooting.
Multiple people at the scene identified Elsid and Washington as being in an argument with the woman and said they had guns at the scene. Washington also admitted to police that he had gun at the scene, but said he didn’t fire it, according to criminal complaints.
Witnesses, surveillance video and cellphone data put Elsid and Washington together before the shooting and put them at the scene at the time the shooting happened, complaints state. Photos from Elsid’s phone showed him in possession of a gun hours before the shooting.
Elsid was taken into custody Friday and had his first appearance in court on Monday. He is being held on a $55,000 cash-only bond. Washington was taken into custody on his possession of a firearm as a felon charge shortly after the shooting, and was being held on a $5,000 cash or surety bond. New bond information for the new attempted murder charge has not yet been filed as of Monday afternoon.
