CEDAR RAPIDS — The second of two juveniles who were arrested Friday after a shooting in Cedar Rapids has been identified after being charged with a felony.
Gregory Vance, 17, has been charged in adult court with possession of a firearm as a felon, a class D felony. He was arrested Friday with his brother — Gerald Vance, 16 — after police say Gerald Vance fired multiple shots at some people he’d been arguing with in the street in the 6600 Block of 1st Ave West, injuring one woman who was hit by a projectile that ricocheted by the shots fired.
Gerald Vance has been charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon — a class C felony — and willful injury resulting in bodily injury, going armed with intent, and reckless use of a firearm resulting in bodily injury — all class D felonies. He also was charged with minor armed with a dangerous weapon and person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, both of which are serious misdemeanors.
After the shooting, Gregory Vance was charged with minor armed with a dangerous weapon, person ineligible to carry dangerous weapon, and possession of a controlled substance — marijuana, all misdemeanors.
According to a criminal complaint, when police responded to the shooting, Gregory Vance had a backpack on him that he tried to keep away from officers. It was searched after the initial arrest and officers found a Smith & Wesson .357 revolver inside, leading to the possessing a firearm as a felon charge, because he has a previous conviction from last year for conspiracy to commit a forcible felony.
Gregory Vance had his first appearance in court on Tuesday and is being held on a $5,000 bond.
