A Waterloo man was arrested this week on charges he stole almost $16,000 from a North Liberty hotel while he worked there as a general manager.
Robert Mosley, 43, is charged with identity theft and first-degree theft.
According to a criminal complaint, he had hired a fake employee under the name Julian Roby to work at the Sleep Inn, at 485 N. Madison Ave. Mosley regularly clocked in and out for the fake employee between April and November 2023. Direct deposit paychecks for “Julian Roby” were going into an account that police believe is associated with Mosley, the complaint states.
Mosley used a Social Security number for Roby for payroll purposes that investigators found actually belonged to someone else in Jerseyville, Ill.
Through the fake employee, Mosley stole $15,915.72 from the hotel, the complaint said. The theft was reported to police in December, and a warrant was issued April 23 for Mosley’s arrest. He was arrested Monday and was being held on $10,000 bail.
