A Marion man was arrested Wednesday night after a man was left with welts from being shot with a paintball gun, authorities said.
Charles Conrad, 23, of Cedar Rapids told police that around 7 p.m. Wednesday, he was shot at least twice with paintballs fired from a vehicle near Second Avenue and 15
th
Street SE. He also said the paintballs "broke the skin and left welts." Officials said the man did not receive immediate medical treatment.
Police received several reports Wednesday of a black SUV with a license plate partially covered with snow shooting paintballs at people. Officers were able to locate the vehicle around 9 p.m. in the 1400 block of First Avenue East. The driver, Deryk Diggs, 24, of Marion, told police he owned the paintball gun located in the vehicle, but did not admit to shooting anyone with paintballs, Sgt. Denni Randall said. The paintball gun was confiscated by authorities.
Sgt. Randall said he was not sure if police had received any reports of paintball damage to houses.
Diggs could face assault with a weapon, driving while license under suspension, no insurance, failure to maintain license plate charges and a city firearms violation. He also had a warrant for his arrest in Johnson County for failure to appear.
Diggs was taken to the Linn County Jail.
