Police: Iowa City man forged, cashed three checks for $1,350

An Iowa City man was arrested Tuesday on theft and forgery charges after police said he allegedly cashed forged checks.

According to the criminal complaint, William J. Nutt, 43, forged the account holder's name on three checks totaling $1,350 between Sept. 27 and Oct. 17.

Police said the first check was cashed at a check-cashing business on Second Street in Coralville. During that transaction, police said the teller requested Nutt's identification to confirm his identity.

Through their investigation, police said they learned Nutt used two separate ATMs to deposit two more checks - one on South Clinton Street and the other on East College Street, both in Iowa City.

Police said the account holder reported the checks were stolen and confirmed he did not sign the checks Nutt allegedly cashed.

Nutt faces charges of second-degree theft and forgery, both class-D felonies.
