Police: Drunk motorcyclist takes officers on high speed chase down I-380, reaching 111 mph

An Iowa City man faces several charges stemming from a high-speed chase Friday morning on Interstate 380.

Timothy Stephen Ryan, 20, of Iowa City was heading north on I-380 just after midnight Friday when an Iowa State Patrol officer saw him make a U-turn just south of North Liberty, according to a report from the state patrol.

According to the report, Ryan, who was driving a black Yamaha motorcycle sped past the officer after making the U-turn.

Ryan didn't stop when the officer turned on his emergency lights, the report said. As Ryan neared the interchange with I-80, he allegedly looked back at the officer, accelerated and reached speeds clocked at 111 mph in the 65-mph zone, the report said.

While continuing to speed, the motorcyclist tried to take the ramp toward I-80 east, but he lost control and struck a sign. Ryan left his bike and began running, according to the report.

Ryan was soon found under a tree in thick brush off the side of I-80 near the exit for Highway 218.

According to the officer's report, Ryan had a strong odor of alcohol and failed a field sobriety test.

Ryan refused a preliminary breath test, but a later test showed he had a breath alcohol concentration of .163 percent, more than twice the legal limit.

Ryan was charged with felony eluding, first offense OWI and possession of a fictitious driver's license. He was taken to Johnson County Jail.
