DUMONT — One person was injured in an officer-involved shooting on Thanksgiving Day after state troopers responded to a report of gunfire at a home.
Details, including the identity of the suspect, weren't immediately available. Authorities said the suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is expected to survive.
Law enforcement officers weren't injured.
The incident is under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which is standard policy for officer-involved shootings.
The Butler County Sheriff's Office received a report of a man shooting into a house with several people trapped inside in the area of County Road C-13 and Franklin Avenue around 9:10 a.m. Thursday.
Deputies and the Iowa State Patrol responded, and a trooper spotted a man matching the description of the suspect carrying a gun
"Shortly after the trooper made contact with the subject, an exchange of gunfire between the subject and the trooper ensued. After the exchange of gunfire, the subject fled into a nearby residence," DCI officials said.
A standoff followed with the State Patrol tactical team responding. Other people inside the home were removed, and a negotiator was able to talk the suspect into surrendering.
Medics took the suspect to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The investigation determined the shooting was not random, and there was a connection between the victims and the subject.
The trooper involved in the exchange of gunfire with the subject has been placed on critical incident leave, according to department policy.
