CEDAR RAPIDS — U.S. Marshals, along with the Cedar Rapids Police Department, arrested an Ohio man wanted in a fatal shooting that happened in a newspaper’s parking lot in Elyria, Ohio.
Antoine Darnell Julis Richardson, 25, of Lorain, faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of Isael Eduardo Rios on Sept. 2 in the parking lot of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram, according to the Chronicle-Telegram.
On Sept. 6, investigators with the Elyria Police Department contacted the U.S. Marshals requesting assistance in the location and apprehension of Richardson, according to a marshal’s news release. After developing information indicating Richardson had fled the state, the marshals began coordinating efforts with other fugitive task forces outside of Ohio.
In early October, investigators established a likely location for Richardson, and began coordinating with the marshal service in the Northern District of Iowa.
Thursday morning, marshals narrowed their search to an address in the 1200 block of 29th Street NE in Cedar Rapids, the release states. Marshals working with the Cedar Rapids Police Department Special Response Team obtained a search warrant. Shortly after 2 p.m., as police approached, Richardson was identified going out the back door of a residence and was arrested.
Richardson will remain in the Linn County Jail until Ohio authorities can extradite him.
In the Ohio fatal shooting, Elyria police arrived on the scene around 3 a.m. and found an unidentified male victim, later identified as Rios, who had been shot several times and later died at a hospital, according to the Chronicle-Telegram. Surveillance video showed that the shooting happened just before 2:30 a.m., after three vehicles pulled into the parking lot. It is unclear what led to the altercation.
Newspaper employees found Rios after the early morning press run and alerted authorities, according to the Chronicle-Telegram.
