Officers believe Monday shooting was ‘targeted’

CEDAR RAPIDS - Officers believe the Monday evening shooting in the southwest neighborhood of Cedar Rapids was the result of a targeted action.

Cedar Rapids police officers were dispatched to Mercy Medical Center at 8:27 p.m. Monday for a 20-year-old male who had sustained a non-life-threatening gun shot wound to the arm, said Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow.

After speaking with him, officers determined the individual had been shot while he was in a vehicle on the 4100 block of 22nd Ave SW. Officers sent to the location found shell casings at the scene of the shooting incident.

Buelow said the individual who had been shot has not been cooperative with investigators at this time.

The 20-year-old male drove himself to the hospital after the shooting and did not notify the police, Buelow said. However, investigators believe there were three other subjects in the vehicle with the individual, who fled Mercy before officers arrived.

This is the third shooting incident in Linn County over the past week. A shooting in Bertram Sunday injured one and resulted in the death of another, and a Thursday evening shooting injured two in Cedar Rapids.
