A North Liberty man faces criminal charges after investigators say he fraudulently received more than 193 weeks of Iowa unemployment insurance benefits.
Gerardo Hernandez, 50, of 16 Holiday Lodge Rd., North Liberty, is accused of first-degree fraudulent practices in connection with the theft, which occurred between 2008 and 2016. Hernandez is accused of receiving more than $77,381 in payments over that time.
With a penalty for improper benefits, Iowa Workforce Development officials say they are owed more than $88,800.
Hernandez was taken into custody Monday and remains in the Johnson County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail following an initial appearance in Johnson County District Court on Tuesday.
