Motion asks for protective order regarding Juweid communications

An attorney representing the University of Iowa in a lawsuit has asked the judge to issue a protective order keeping a fired UI professor from contacting university employees about the case.

George Carroll, an assistant attorney general with the state representing the UI defendants in the lawsuit filed by Malik Juweid, filed the motion last week in District Court in Johnson County.

Carroll says Juweid has repeatedly contacted UI employees and defendants in the lawsuit, mostly by email. The motion asks for a protective order from the court to keep Juweid from contacting individual defendants or university employees in regards to the case, asking that he instead communicate through legal counsel.

UI President Sally Mason in August fired Juweid, then a tenured radiology professor, after a UI judicial panel found he compromised patient confidentiality and acted inappropriately toward co-workers. Juweid, 51, had been on paid leave since 2011.

Separate from the internal UI process against him, Juweid has a pending lawsuit against the UI and several university officials, alleging discrimination.
