Marshalltown man arrested, charged with attempted murder

MARSHALLTOWN - Police have arrested and charged a man in connection with a shooting early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to the Flamingo Motel, in the 700 block of Iowa Avenue West, around 1:24 a.m. They arrived to find a female victim in one of the rooms with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a release from the Marshalltown Police Department.

She was first transported to Marshalltown Medical and Surgery Center, and then to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Her name and condition were not released.

Investigators say a man, identified as 31-year-old Jean Martinez-Velazquez, was also inside the room and taken into custody for questioning.

Authorities later arrested and charged Martinez-Velazquez with attempted murder, a Class B felony, possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, a Class B felony, and aggravated domestic assault, an aggravated misdemeanor.

He was transported to the Marshall County Jail before his initial appearance, which was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
