Marion man accused of breaking into apartment, assaulting woman

A Marion man faces multiple charges after he allegedly forced his way into an apartment, assaulted a woman and damaged her vehicle.
According to the criminal complaint, Robert Bates, 26, allegedly removed a window air-conditioning unit Jan. 17 and entered a residence on 18th Street in Marion. The complaint states Bates assaulted a woman inside the residence, striking her several times in face.
Police said Bates then slashed the front tires on the woman's vehicle and rammed her vehicle several times with his truck, causing from $1,000 to $10,000 in damage.
Bates faces charges of first-degree burglary, a Class B felony; second-degree criminal mischief, a Class D felony; and assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor.
