Marion man accused of attempted murder bonds out again

Oct. 9, 2014 3:09 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - An 18-year-old charged with attempted murder who initially bonded out of jail due to a computer error has bonded out again, but this time, there's no error.
Brandon Gordon of Marion posted a $50,000 surety bond Tuesday, which is 10 percent of the $500,000 bond set during his initial appearance last month, according to Linn County District Court documents.
Gordon turned himself in Sept. 23 on a warrant issued after the jail error bonded him out Sept. 20 before he saw a judge.
Gordon must comply with the same conditions of release set by 6th Judicial Associate District Judge Jane Spande during the initial appearance, according to Associate District Judge Casey Jones' order. Gordon must contact the Department of Corrections within 24 hours of release and he can have no contact with the two people he's been accused of shooting at, Kirsten Meyer and Rodney Burt, as well as an unidentified juvenile.
Gordon is charged with attempted murder, willful injury, two counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon and two counts of going armed with intent. He is accused of firing shots into a black Ford SUV at 12:19 p.m. Sept. 19 at the BP gas station, 4141 Center Point Road NE. Police said Gordon was attempting to hit Rodney Burt, 19, a passenger in the SUV, but instead hit Kirsten Meyer, 18, the driver. Meyer was hit at least once, police said.
Gordon was arrested 27 minutes later when he was found on foot near the intersection of 32nd Street and Eastern Avenue SE.
An error in the sheriff office's computerized bond system didn't recognize Gordon's charges as forcible felonies and allowed him to post 10 percent of a $65,000 bond, Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner explained after the incident. When the error was discovered, the sheriff's office sought a warrant for Gordon's arrest.
