An Alabama man who was shot last week while exchanging gunfire with Linn County Sheriff’s deputies in Hiawatha is facing charges of attempted murder of a peace officer, according to a press release from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
Samuel Reese III, 32, of Center Point, Alabama, has been in the hospital since Dec. 31, when he was involved in a car chase with law enforcement after an alleged car jacking in Cedar Falls.
Reese shot at officers while driving, and again while running from them after crashing his car near the intersection of I-380 and Tower Terrace Road in Hiawatha. He was hit when officers returned fire, according to the sheriff’s office.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the chase or shooting.
On Tuesday, Reese was released from the hospital and transported to the Linn County Jail. A sheriff’s office press release states that he faces several charges, including three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, three counts of assault on a peace officer, two counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, and one count each of felony eluding, assault while participating in a felony, use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime, person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, and interference with official acts with a weapon.
The charges will be formally filed Wednesday when Reese has his first appearance in court.
