CEDAR RAPIDS — A man who assaulted a woman in Cedar Rapids early Sunday was shot by one of her relatives during the incident, police say.
At 5:15 a.m., Cedar Rapids police were dispatched to a home in the 900 block of 12th Street NE for reports of a man assaulting a woman. Callers said gunshots had been fired, according to a news release.
Officers found a 21-year-old woman with non-life-threatening injuries who apparently had been assaulted by David Rafael Walker, 34, according to witnesses.
Before officers arrived at the scene, Walker went to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital by private vehicle with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg.
Based on a preliminary investigation, officers said an 18-year-old relative of the woman shot Walker during the assault.
Walker was charged with assault causing bodily injury. After treatment at the hospital, he was transferred to the Linn County Jail.
A news release said police are working with the Linn County Attorney’s Office to determine whether additional charges will be filed.
