A man was arrested Wednesday in Las Vegas on Linn County charges of first-degree murder and nonconsensual termination of pregnancy. The arrest came three weeks after a woman was found dead in southwest Cedar Rapids.
U.S. Marshals in Nevada arrested Donnie Danell White, 51, in relation to the death of Brittany Hopkins, 38, of Cedar Rapids, according to a news release.
Police found Hopkins dead outside an apartment building Feb. 28, after responding to a report of a deceased person in the 2100 block of Westdale Drive SW.
Cedar Rapids Police contacted the U.S. Marshals Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force on March 14 to request help locating and apprehending White. Task Force investigators found information indicating White had fled the state after Hopkins’ death.
They coordinated with officers from the Nevada Violent Offender Task Force, who found White in the 2900 block of West Washington Avenue in Las Vegas on Wednesday. They approached him shortly after 3 p.m., and he “eventually surrendered and was arrested without incident,” according to a news release.
White will remain in U.S. Marshals’ custody until he can be extradited to Iowa.
