CEDAR RAPIDS — A 36-year-old Cedar Rapids man faces a charge of attempted murder after police say he stabbed another man last week during a fight in northwest Cedar Rapids.
Kendall C. Johnson stabbed the victim “at least eight times” while making statements about being a “killer,” and the victim “nearly died” from his injuries, according to the criminal complaint.
Cedar Rapids police were called just before midnight Aug. 24 to the 100 block of 14th Street NW, where they found Marvin Cheers Jr., 35, with stab wounds to his neck, torso and limbs.
Police said they obtained a description of the car the assailant fled in and found blood at the scene that matched Johnson’s DNA profile.
Police determined the two men had been arguing inside a residence, and the fight had continued in the front yard, where Cheers was stabbed.
A warrant was served on Johnson at the Linn County Jail, where he was in custody on unrelated charges.
Johnson’s bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety during a Wednesday hearing in Linn County District Court, according to court records.
