IOWA CITY - Police arrested a juvenile after a fight broke out in the City High School parking lot earlier this week.
Police were called to the school, 1900 Morningside Dr., at about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a male and two females fighting in the school's south parking lot.
Police said a juvenile was arrested on a charge of assault causing injury with intent to inflict serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor.
In a letter to school families, Principal John Bacon called the fight a 'serious altercation” that occurred before the start of classes.
'The incident began off campus as a traffic dispute between adults who were bringing their students to school,” Bacon said in the letter.
'The altercation then carried into our parking lot and became physical. The situation required the assistance of both the Iowa City Police Department and ambulance services.”
Bacon said the City High administrative team will likely take disciplinary action in regard to the fight.
'Please know that we take these issues very seriously and will take every step necessary to make sure the situation is handled thoroughly and justly,” he wrote. 'The safety of our students, families, and community is our top priority.”
