Iowa City police arrested two Cedar Rapids men and a juvenile for first degree robbery after they allegedly attempted to rob a man at gunpoint early Tuesday morning.
According to the arrest reports, Keith Delino Whittmon-Anderson, 20, and Sais E. Troche Vargas, 20, both of Cedar Rapids, approached an individual on foot at about 1:20 a.m. in the 400 block of Gilbert St. in Iowa City.
Police said Whittmon-Anderson and Troche Vargas got the victim's attention by saying 'Sir,' and asking him for a cigarette.
According to the report, the man replied that he did not have a cigarette to give, and kept walking.
The pair then allegedly stopped the victim, police said, and Troche Vargas displayed a firearm and demanded the individual to turn over his wallet. When the man said, 'No,' Whittmon-Anderson allegedly took the gun from Troche Vargas and attempted to intimidate the victim to hand over his wallet.
According to the report, the defendants tried to forcibly take the wallet, but the victim fought them off.
When the men were taken into custody, Whittmon-Anderson allegedly was in possession of the firearm, and 20.4 grams of marijuana packaged in a plastic bag.
Whittmon-Anderson and Troche Vargas each face charges of first degree Robbery — a Class B felony — and possession of a controlled substance. Whittmon-Anderson faces an additional charge of carrying a concealed dangerous weapon.
The report does not specify the juvenile's involvement in the incident, only that he or she also faces charges of first-degree robbery and carrying a concealed dangerous weapon.
