Iowa City man faces charges in connection with July shooting

Aug. 25, 2021 4:27 pm
IOWA CITY — An Iowa City man faces multiple charges in connection with a shooting in July after police executed search warrants at his residence.
Court documents show Marquel Dashaun Poole, 21, faces charges of dominion or control of a firearm or offensive weapon by a felon, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The charges stem from two search warrants police executed at “residences associated with the defendant in connection to a July 18, 2021, shooting incident,” court documents show.
Previous reporting by The Gazette shows police investigated a shooting that occurred just after 4 a.m. July 18 in the 500 block of South Scott Boulevard.
Investigators said evidence at the scene indicated more than 50 shots had been fired from multiple weapons, causing damage to vehicles and buildings in the area. No injuries were reported.
While executing the search warrants, police said they found “multiple firearms,” including a Smith & Wesson SD9 pistol and a Springfield Saint .223 pistol.
Additionally, officers said, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found at the residence.
Poole faces another charge of participating that stems from a separate incident that occurred June 5, 2021, at the Capitol Street Parking Ramp.
According to the criminal complaint, two people were assaulted by multiple suspects — as many as five or six — and were being treated as a hospital.
Police said video of the attack shows “the defendant and several other individuals engaged in the altercation.”
Police said Poole was clearly identifiable in the video.
