Iowa City man arrested on theft charge hours after being shot

Less than 24 hours after he reported being shot by an unknown assailant, an Iowa city man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly stealing a moped.

According to the criminal complaint, Iowa City police officers received a report regarding a moped that was stolen on Oct. 24. The report does not specify from where the two-wheeler was taken.

Three days later, on Oct. 27, investigators said they received a tip that the moped was at a residence in the 2700 block of Wayne Avenue, at the home of Lonnie R. Clark, 33, who had reported being shot twice at his home early Tuesday morning.

Officers executed a search warrant at Clark's home on Halloween, according to the report, and recovered the stolen moped.

A warrant was issued for Clark's arrest on Nov. 5 and he was taken into custody Tuesday.

Earlier that morning, Iowa City police said they responded at about 2:20 a.m. to Clark's residence after a woman reported her husband had been shot. The suspects, police said, fled in a truck that was described as having a trailer dragging behind it.

Police said the shooting investigation is ongoing.

When they arrived, police found clark had been shot twice - once in the arm and again in the abdomen, according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen.

Clark faces a second-degree theft charge in connection with the stolen moped and he is being held at Johnson County Jail on a $10,000 bond, according to court documents.

Court records show Clark has several pending felony charges in connection with stolen items including two mopeds, a box trailer, an all-terrain vehicle and a mountain bike.
