Iowa City man accused of firing shots at party

An Iowa City man was arrested on suspicion of a felony firearm charge over the weekend after police said he fired shots during a party on the south side of town.

Police were called about 3:30 a.m. Sunday to the 2000 block of Davis Street – east of Broadway Street and south of Hollywood Boulevard – on a report of shots fired, according to a news release. Officers received numerous 911 calls about the shots, police said, and there were reports of a large number of people running around the area.

Officers found a large party at 2024 Davis St. and determined the shots were fired during a fight that broke out at the gathering, according to the news release. Witnesses told police the shooter was Samuel Lee Lockett III, 24, and that he had already fled the scene, officers reported.

Police found Lockett on Coneflower Court about 7:30 a.m. and arrested him following a brief foot chase. During the chase, according to police, Lockett submerged himself in a creek.

A handgun, which investigators believe Locket used in the early-morning shooting, was recovered in the creek with the help of the Iowa City Fire Department.

He faces a felony charge of possession of a firearm by a felon and interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor. The investigation is ongoing.

No one was injured in the shooting, although a window was damaged, according to police.

Emily Miskowicz, 22, of 2024 Davis St. was cited for keeping a disorderly house in connection with the incident.

Lockett has a lengthy criminal history in Iowa, including a conviction for assault with intent to inflict serious injury and trespassing in 2010.

In December, Lockett was arrested on suspicion of breaking into a Fareway store three years earlier. Police reported using DNA evidence recovered from three black socks found at the scene to make the arrest. But the charges in that case were dismissed earlier this month.
