An Illinois woman was arrested Thursday in Linn County on charges that she stole more than $6,000 from two dependent adults for whom she was a caretaker.
Sumaya Thomas, 19, of Dixon, Ill., is charged with second-degree theft, third-degree theft, and two counts each of dependent adult abuse and credit card fraud.
According to a criminal complaint, Thomas used the debit cards of two dependent adults for whom she was working as a caretaker through Limitless Potential, a Cedar Rapids-based nonprofit that provides supported community living services to individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Between March 3 and March 25, she stole $5,834 from one of the victims and $878.27 from the other by using their debit cards without their permission, the complaint states.
A warrant was issued for Thomas’ arrest on April 15, and she was arrested Thursday. She had her first appearance in court on Friday, and is being held in the Linn County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
