IOWA CITY — An Illinois man was accused last week of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in an alleged assault that police said three people witnessed.
Jeremiah Jay Burgess, 21, of Peoria, Ill., was charged with one count of second-degree sexual abuse. He is accused of sexually abusing the child Aug. 29 in North Liberty.
Burgess also is charged in two other cases — with public intoxication and disorderly conduct in one case and possession of a fictitious driver’s license in another one Sept. 11 in Iowa City.
If convicted of sexual abuse, he faces 25 years in prison. Burgess remains in jail with bail set at $100,000. A judge also issued a no-contact order to protect the 12-year-old.
